During the winter months it can be tough to beat the blues. Here are ten things that you can try to help you stay happy and healthy this holiday season.
Exercise
Keep your body in motion by doing at least 30 minutes activity to get your blood pumping a few times a week—remember, exercise releases endorphins which is your brain’s happy chemical!
Drink Water
By keeping your body hydrated you can improve your cognitive brain function and mood.
Explore Nature
Getting yourself outside by going for a walk, bike ride, or a swim can relieve stress, anxiety, and depression, and don’t forget the wonders of fresh air.
Get Enough Sleep
Getting 8 to 9 hours of sleep each night is important for the human body. Without a proper sleep schedule, you can become at risk of medical issues like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
Take a Breather
Breathe deeply and exhale fully. A deep breathing technique can slow your heartbeat, stabilize your blood pressure, and lower stress.
Meditate
Stopping to calm your mind, even just for two minutes, can reduce stress and anxiety. If you can meditate for at least a few minutes every day eventually your sleep and memory can improve and your attention span can lengthen.
Compliment Others
The more we build up others the more we also build up ourselves.
Turn Off Your Phone
If only for an hour every day it is important to completely detach yourself from your smart phone, especially your social media accounts.
Connect with Friends
Reach out to a friend or a family member you have not spoken with in a while.
Forget Your Negative Thoughts
When one comes unbidden into your mind acknowledge it but do not dwell on it. Let it go. The more conscious you are of your negative thoughts the easier it will be for you to release them. Think as positively as you can. Remember, the way you talk to yourself makes a significant difference in your self image.
Bonus: check out a book from the library! By reading and exercising your mind your brain releases a chemical called dopamine, which makes you happy!
