Five Reasons to Participate in Summer Reading
Schools is almost out and that means it is time to sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the Library! Every year, the library celebrates the joy of reading for fun by challenging our community to read in their library books for 20 minutes every day. Whether it is picture books, chapter books, audio books, or magazines-all reading is good reading and it all counts for the challenge!
The program begins on June 1st, so be sure to sign up for the program today at mytpl.org/srp or stop by any of our nine library branches. This year’s challenge will have you reading at least 20 minutes a day in your library books. For every five days that you do that, you complete a level.
All readers who complete the first level will receive a certificate, a brag tag, an “I Love My Library” yard sign, and a chance to win a big prize. Kindergarteners to 6th graders will have a chance to win a bicycle and helmet (courtesy of the Friends of the Terrebonne Public Library and the Kiwanis Club) and 7th graders to adults will have a chance to win a Kindle Fire Tablet. For every level completed after the first, readers will receive another brag tag and another raffle entry.
Be sure to have all your reading logged by July 31st in order to be included in the raffles!
If you need more convincing, here are five reasons you should participate.
Prevent the Summer Slide
Summer is a great time to relax and have fun, but research shows it’s also a time where students can lose some of the important reading skills that they’ve gained in the previous year. To help keep our brain and skills sharp, pick up a book and read! There’s no need to worry about page counts or AR points during the summer. Grab a book (or two or twelve) and jump right in for some reading fun.
Build Good Reading Habits
Want to get back into a reading habit, but having trouble? Then just read a little bit everyday! Our summer reading program challenges you to fit in just twenty minutes of reading a day. We bet by the end of the summer you will be back to reading way past your bed time.
Entertainment at the Right Price: FREE!
Finding fun things to do during the summer can start to get really expensive, especially if you’ve got a big group of kids to keep busy. Put your tax dollars to good use by taking advantage of your library. Not only can you check out books, we also have magazines and DVDs that you can take home. Looking for a fun activity? Check out our online calendar or sign up for our monthly newsletter to stay current on our latest library programs.
Family Bonding
Reading a story to the littles in your life is a great way to bond with them. By sharing stories, not only are you building wonderful memories together, the kids in your life will also associate reading with happy times-a big plus! Check out some of your books from your childhood to share with them and discover some new favorites along the way. Looking for a new book to read? Ask any of the library staff for recommendations. We’d love to help you!
Discover New Genres and Authors
Summertime is a great time to branch out and try new authors or checkout a different genre. Have you ever read a graphic novel? Historical fiction? A cozy mystery or a sizzling romance? Browse our shelves to discover something new or ask a library staff member what their current favorite book is. You might just discover your new favorite!
This year’s summer reading theme is “Tales and Tails” so we are celebrating all books about animals. From bugs and spiders, to cats and dogs, and bigfoot and unicorns, we’ve got something for everyone. Below, are some books to get you started. If you need any help located these books or others, please do not hesitate to ask a library staff member. Happy reading!
