Back-to-School Super Foods
Healthy breakfast is always a good start to a child’s school day. It can improve focus and memory.
Oatmeal is a great choice for breakfast because it has benefits on spatial memory. It is a good source of protein that provides a steady stream of energy for a child because it digests slowly.
A great addition to lunch or an after school snack is fruit. Berries, cherries, and grapes have antioxidants that can improve blood flow to the brain. Dark berries like blueberries and blackberries contain anthocyanins that can improve memory function. They can be served many different way like fresh, frozen, or even dried.
Eggs are great for more than just breakfast. Eggs are full of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins B12 and D, which are crucial for cognitive power. The yolks have a lot of choline, which helps the brain make acetylcholine, which can be important for memory recall. Eggs can be served with breakfast, or boiled eggs can be pre-made to go in lunches or quick snacks.
Dark chocolate is a sweet treat that increases blood flow to the brain. It also has healthy amount of caffeine which can help children focus. There are plenty of different ways to include it in your child’s meals: as a powder in their milk, little chips in raspberries, or just chunks of it as a snack or for dessert.
