Summer Camping at Home

Keep your summer structured with goal-oriented summer camping at home! The library is a fantastic resource for this as we offer the summer reading program. Each day we challenge kids to read for at least 20 minutes, so for every 5 days of 20-minute reading kids are able to earn one brag tag—your goal being to collect them all! However, as a bonus, each time you earn one brag tag you also earn one entry into the bike raffle. That is right, a bicycle completed with your very own helmet! This summer the more you read the more likely you are to win the bike, so when you’re not sure what to do pick up your book!

Other than your weekly field trips to the library you can also visit our Summer StoryWalk at Westgate Park from June 1st – July 31st. Westgate Park is located at the end of Valhi Lagoon Crossing, behind Coburn’s of Houma. StoryWalk is a fun and innovative way for people of all ages to exercise their bodies as well as their minds. As you take your walk along a path you will encounter a story, page-by-page, on individual signs. When you have reached the end of the path, you will have read an entire book! The featured book will be Caterina and the Best Beach Day by Erin Kono.

At home outdoor activity ideas include: bird watching, picnics, nature scavenger hunts, and a backyard camp out. Camping is such a fun and exciting experience for kids of all ages. It gives children a sense of independence while still in a safe place, at home. Campfires for hotdogs and smores roasting are also fun way to get kids talking about fire safety and fill their bellies at the same time!

Print out this scavenger hunt card and get to looking!

Indoor at home activities are also great opportunities to learn and have fun. The library holds a significant selection of “how-to” and science experiment books that will walk you step by step through some really fun projects that also teach basic science concepts.

Finally, you can go hiking on the Mandalay Nature Trail at the very end of Rue De La Manson, Houma, LA. This is a short hike with little incline or decline, and at ¾ mile it takes approximately 2o minutes to complete. While this trail is kid friendly, you will have to leave any pets at home as they are not permitted on the trail. Once you reach the end of the trail there is an observation deck where you can view the wetlands and spot native, wild animals like birds, alligators, or turtles. As you spot these animals note them so the next time you visit the library you can learn more about the wildlife you saw!
