1000 Books before kindergarten
HOW IT WORKS
1. All children from birth to before they enter kindergarten can participate. The child must complete 1,000 books before August 1st of the year that they start kindergarten.
2. Grownups can register their child at any Terrebonne Parish Library location.
3. When you register a child, you will receive your first log and a tracking poster.
4. Color in a circle every time a book is read. Be sure to put the initials of the person that read the book below the appropriate circle.
5. After reading 100 books, bring your log in to any branch. The child will receive a special “100 books!” sticker to put on their tracking poster and a new log.
6. When the child reads 1,000 books they will receive a certificate, a car magnet, a special tote bag, and an invitation to our 1,000 party in August.
THE FAQs
Is it really possible to read 1,000 books?
We know it sounds like a lot at first, but if you read just one book to your child a day, that is 365 books in a year. At the end of three years that totals to 1,095 books! Or, if you read three books a day, you can reach the goal in just a year.
Do they all have to be library books?
Nope! Books can be read from anywhere.
Do story time books count?
What about the books read at daycare? Yes! Any book that is read to your child, whether it is in daycare, at home, or at a library story time counts towards the program.
What if I don’t know what to read?
Ask a library staff member. We would be happy to help you find some great books for you and your child to read.
Is it okay if my child just wants to read the same book again and again?
Absolutely! Every time you read a book, even it is the same one 500 times, it counts.
