The Reading Well
Once upon a time, storytelling meant sitting still and listening. Times have changed and so are the ways children learn. The Terrebonne Parish Library System outreach program, Reading Well, visits 40 early childhood centers entertaining 1,400 children per month. This service helps to train and educate daycare workers, along with reading. A book, Hurrication, was written by Outreach Manager Lillie Brunet to explain to young children about evacuating for hurricanes.
The success of the Reading Well program expanded with Reading Forever. This focus is on licensed assisted living and nursing home facilities’ patrons. The sites are visited twice a month and include book discussions, arts and computer classes, along with material delivery. The big book bags from Reading Well Outreach are also lent with the Reading Forever staff so book discussions and storytelling are available throughout the month.
Did you know that the library travels? Our Outreach services go out to daycare centers and nursing homes throughout the parish to help those who can’t reach the library still receive our services. Contact us for more information.
